Conflicting results have been reported between the use of conventional protocol MRI and advanced protocol MRI to avoid unnecessary histopathology when magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used for the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Therefore, we aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of conventional MRI and advanced technique MRI to avoid unnecessary histopathology.A total of 3,757 HCCs and 3,682 benign liver lesions from 35 studies were included. The overall sensitivity and specificity of the diagnostic performance of conventional MRI was 0.81 (0.77-0.94) 0.78 (0.84-0.92) and Advance MRI 0.93 (0.83-0.89), 0.86 (0.79-0.96) respectively.
